New community development in South LA

Responding to an urgent need in Los Angeles for permanent homes for veterans and people who have experienced homelessness and disability, Clifford Beers Housing is developing the King 1101 Apartments near the corner of Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. and Vermont Ave. King 1101 will transform a vacant lot into a beautiful and green-friendly multi-family community with street-front retail.

The design of King 1101 creates an environment that encourages health, community and economic development, including green roofs, community gardens, social services offices, and the first graywater recycling system for a multi-family building in the City of Los Angeles.

King 1101 is supported by Councilmember Marqueece Harris-Dawson of District 8, the North Area Neighborhood Development Council, and local businesses and organizations. Councilmember Harris-Dawson says, “King 1101 will alleviate the unmet need for high-quality and affordable homes and contribute greatly to the revitalization of the neighborhood.” “The lot has been vacant for several years and is an eyesore in the community,” adds Sandra McNeill, Executive Director of local organization T.R.U.S.T South LA. “King 1101 will transform blighted land into a community resource, add value to the community, and create much needed affordable housing and jobs.”

Clifford Beers Housing expects to receive tax credits for King 1101 and begin construction in late 2016. All other financing for the development has been committed, including $3.9 million from the City of Los Angeles.
